The Woodlands is a Special-purpose district and Census-designated area (CDP) in the U. S. state of Texas in the Houston–-- The Woodlands–-- Sugar Land city statistical location. The Woodlands is largely found in Montgomery County, with parts extending into Harris County. The Woodlands is controlled by The Woodlands Territory, a company that gives metropolitan services and is provided by an elected board of supervisors. As of the 2020 U. S. Demographics, the area had a population of 114,436 people. In 2021, The Howard Hughes Firm approximated the population of The Woodlands was 119,000. The United States Demographics Bureau specifies a metropolitan area separate from the Houston city location with The Woodlands as a major city: The Woodlands–-- Conroe, TX urban area had a 2020 population of 402,454, making it the 103rd largest in the USA. The Woodlands lies 28 miles (45 km) north of Houston along Interstate 45. Though it started as an exurban development and a bedroom community, it has additionally brought in firms and has several business campuses, most notably Occidental Petroleum Firm, Chevron Phillips Chemical, Huntsman Company, Woodforest National Financial Institution, Baker Hughes, McKesson Specialty Health And Wellness, and Halliburton.
